A common question we get asked by customers is how long does it take for CBD to work. Well, it’s not a simple question to answer because although we’re all humans, our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) does not operate the same way. Also, not everyone has the same reason for using CBD. Some people usually feel a difference in the first 3 days while for others it may take anywhere from 2-4 weeks (and longer sometimes) to see results.
Although your friend might be swearing to you that consuming Colorado Botanicals products worked instantly or within the first week, it might be different for you because everyone’s body processes CBD and cannabinoids differently.
How CBD Get Processed In Our Bodies
We’ve talked about how CBD works in our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) blog post but we’ll go ahead and summarize it here for you because it’s really important to understand how cannabinoids get processed in our bodies so you have an overall idea of it.
Our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) possesses these receptors called the CB1 & CB2 receptors and these receptors are responsible for regulating our physiology, mood, and everyday experience. When our body is not functioning properly, we see an increase in disease and disorders, like migraines, fibromyalgia, and IBS. With the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), we’ve discovered that our body fails to produce enough of its own endocannabinoids (if you didn’t know, our body already has its own cannabinoids called “endocannabinoids”). When taking CBD, or Colorado Botanicals Hemp Extract, your body will process the cannabinoids and terpenes to enhance and nourish those receptors in your body.
So How Long Does it Take CBD to Work?
Not only does it depend on the person to notice results but also the method of consumption differs in the bioavailability of CBD. For the sake of saving your time we’re just going to go straight to the point and you can learn about the different bioavailability of consumption of CBD by clicking here.
In general, CBD can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to notice effects. When taking CBD sublingually, dropping oil under the tongue, you can expect to notice a sense of calm, relaxed feeling between 15-30 minutes. When taking an edible or softgel you would typically notice a difference in 30-45 minutes.
It’s also really important to note that the first couple days of taking CBD you might not notice results and that’s completely normal because adding CBD to your health routine is new to your body and as you continue to use CBD your body reacts quicker and better. Give it a week of consistently using the product and you should notice results or at least a sense of calm, relaxation, and improved sleep.
How long until you notice results from taking CBD?
If you need CBD for everyday wellness, improved sleep, improved mood, enhanced exercise recovery, or anything such as those then you should notice results within the first couple days or first week with only a dose of 10-20mg of CBD per day.
If you’re using CBD for something more serious then it can take up to 2 to 4 weeks to see results. It’s very important to remember how CBD works so you can understand why patience and consistency are important.
We always recommend our customers to begin with the lowest dose and work up to find the “sweet spot” unless you have a more serious reason for using CBD then it is very reasonable to consume higher doses of CBD like our 750mg Hemp Extract or 1,500mg Hemp Extract. Our 300mg CBD oil (contains 10mg per serving) or 10mg softgels are perfect for starters. We recommend taking 1-2 servings per day with 6-8 hours in between for best results.
If you don’t notice results after using it for about a week, then we would advise increasing your dose by 5-10mg every 2 to 3 days after. Make sure to check out our blog post on CBD dosing to learn more about what dose is best for you.
Why Quality of the CBD Extract is Really Important
When choosing a CBD product to purchase, it’s extremely important that the quality of the hemp extract is really good because a lot of factors contribute to the effectiveness and purity of the oil. CBD from one company is not the same CBD from another. Not all hemp is created equal and not all CBD extracts are equal! Some factors that play a critical role in determining the quality are:
- The hemp plants used for extraction
- How well the plants were cured (dried after harvest) to retain as many cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant compounds.
- The extraction method used: CO2, Ethanol, Butane, Hydrocarbon, etc.
- The purification process to wipe out unnecessary plant compounds which can interfere with the potency/bioavailability of the hemp extract.
- Is it Isolate or Full/Broad Spectrum? Read more here.

The Takeaway from How Long it Takes CBD to Work:
CBD does not work the same for every person because our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) does not process and absorb cannabinoids the same. Each person is unique in their own way and they just need to find what works best for them. In general, we always recommend our customers to start with lower doses such as the 300mg hemp extract or 10mg softgels to test the waters because who knows it might end up working very well and you don’t need to spend more money on the higher doses. If you believe you need a higher dose than begin with the 750mg hemp extract or 25mg softgels.
